From 1 December 2020, all lotteries promoted in Ireland will be governed by a new set of rules.  This is the date that the long awaited Gaming and Lotteries (Amendment) Act 2019 commenced.

On 4 December 2019, the Gaming and Lotteries (Amendment) Bill 2019 (the “Bill”) was passed by Dáil Éireann and when in force it will make significant changes to both the circumstances in which a lottery licence will be required and the requirements for obtaining a licence to run a lottery.

The Court of Justice of the European Union (“CJEU”) delivered its eagerly anticipated judgment in the Planet49 case on 1 October 2019.
