The President of the Medical Council launched the updated Guide to Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Medical Practitioners (9th Edition 2024) last week at a Good Professional Practice Conference. The update Guide which provides a welcome and comprehensive update for doctors practising in Ireland.
It follows an extensive review and consultation period and includes updates in relation to important open disclosure and assisted decision-making legislation. The Guide sets out the values and principles that underpin professionalism and good medical practice in the interests of patients and the broader population. The Medical Council also acknowledge that doctors need to be supported by the health service and by colleagues in their efforts to provide good standards of care. The guidance, in this 9th edition, is effective from 1 January 2024. The Guide will be communicated to all registered doctors shortly and is already available on the Medical Council website. The Hayes healthcare team, who have a wealth of experience in representing doctors before the Medical Council, recommends that every doctor reads this new updated Guide. We believe that being familiar with the content of the updated Guide will greatly assist doctors in their present and future practice as it deals with many of the everyday challenges faced by doctors in a clear, concise and helpful manner.
