On 2 October 2017 the Mediation Bill 2017 was signed into law by the President and the Act came into full effect on 1 January 2018. The arrival of the Mediation Act 2017 is much welcomed and should help promote the benefits of mediation and increase its use in civil litigation proceedings.

The Medical Practitioners (Amendment) Act 2017, which was signed into law on 6 November 2017, outlines new mandatory legal requirements regarding levels of professional medical indemnity for all medical practitioners currently registered or applying to register with the Medical Council.

As 2017 draws to a close, I thank you on behalf of all of us at Hayes solicitors for your support during the course of the year. It’s been another eventful year, full of unpredictability and challenges, and I suspect it will be more of the same in 2018.

Section 18.3 of the Guide to Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Medical Practitioners in Ireland places an obligation on medical practitioners to be open and honest with patients.
