The prospect of some long-awaited reform of defamation law moves closer, with the publication of the Defamation (Amendment) Bill 2024 (“the Bill”) on 2 August last.

On 28 March, the Department of Justice published the draft General Scheme of the Defamation (Amendment) Bill. The proposed Bill gives effect to recommendations of the Report of the Review of the Defamation Act 2009, published last year by the Minister for Justice.

In June 2021, the Victorian Supreme Court of Appeal upheld an important decision of the Supreme Court of Victoria concerning the law of defamation.
