Hayes solicitors were again delighted to be invited by the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) to participate in their workshop day as part of their Certificate on Geriatric Medicine which took place on 1 February 2014.
The focus of the workshop was on the challenges faced by GPs in caring for elderly and cognitively impaired patients. Marie O’Riordan, Associate in the firm’s Private Client Department spoke about assessing testamentary capacity, living wills and Advance Care Directives. She covered developments over recent years in terms of the Advanced Healthcare Decisions Bill 2012 and the Assisted Decision Making Capacity Bill 2013. Gráinne Macdougald, Associate in the Healthcare Department, addressed the issues of Consent and Capacity, Refusal of Treatment, the Duty of Confidentiality with particular focus on confidentiality after death, and Record keeping and Prescribing.
